We took our time to watch this one. When we finally did we wre amazed. Russ was familiar with the history behind it but not this violent detail. It is excellent but don't let your kids watch it - much too violently graphic. Daniel Day-Lewis is superb as the ultimate villain. Its hard to realise he's the same man who starred in My Left Foot and The Last of the Mohicans

Dancing at Lunasa

Set in 1936 rural Ireland, this bittersweet tale examines the emotional lives of the five unmarried Mundy sisters. In their mutual care is 8-year-old Michael, the illegitimate son of the youngest sister. A voice-over from the adult Michael recalls that significant summer, in the month of August and during the feast of Lughnasa, when the townfolk dance around a fire to Lugh, the ancient god of light. Filled with ironic and haunting meaning, the film is directed by Pat O'Connor (Circle of Friends), the music is beautiful, the cinematography is gorgeous, the performances are excellent - and that last scene is unforgettable.

Circle of Friends

Smoothly adapted from the novel by Maeve Binchy and set in Ireland during the 1950s, this disarmingly sweet and dramatically insightful love story provides a charming showcase for Chris O'Donnell and also for Minnie Driver, whose performance drew critical raves and gave her career a huge boost. What was especially memorable for us was the theme written by Paddy Moloney of the Chieftains; it's so beautiful, our daughter included it in her wedding ceremony for the procession of the bridesmaids.

Irish God and Goddess of love

Oengus is the Irish God of love, beauty and youth. According to the old folklore, his kisses became birds. It is also said that he dreamed of a beautiful maiden named Caer, for whom he searched all over Ireland. Eventually, he found her chained to 150 other maidens, destined to become swans at the time of Samhain. Legend has it that Oengus transformed himself into a swan and was united with his love.
Aine of Knockaine is the Irish Goddess of love. She is also known as the Fairy Queen of Munster and as a goddess of fertility beause she has control and command over crops and animals, especially cattle. Another name by which she is known is Aillen. To learn more about Irish mythology, please click Irish Myths & Legends.
